Gmail "Send mail as" is ending in January 2027: what to do
If you use a free Gmail account to send as another address (your own domain, or a Yahoo, Outlook, AOL or internet-provider address) through the "Send mail as" setting, Google says that stops working in January 2027. Google hasn't announced an exact day.
What Google is changing
"You will no longer be able to send mail from third-party email accounts in Gmail on the web or in the Gmail mobile apps."
Google's timeline: "January 2027: Gmail will fully remove 'Send as' for third-party accounts, Gmailify, and POP." Before then, "Gmail may restrict new configurations," so adding a new address may already be blocked.

What keeps working
- Mail forwarded into Gmail keeps arriving (Google confirms forwarding is not affected).
- Mail already in your Gmail stays there.
- Sending as another Gmail address, or a Google Workspace alias, still works.
- You can still add other email accounts to the Gmail app on Android, iPhone and iPad.
Are you affected? (30 seconds)
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Click Settings (the gear icon), then See all settings.
- Open Accounts and Import.
- Look under "Send mail as" and "Check mail from other accounts".
If one of those addresses isn't a Gmail address and isn't hosted on Google Workspace, it's likely affected.
Pick your fix
You already have a real mailbox with your provider
Most web hosts, Yahoo, AOL and many internet providers include one. Free option: add that mailbox to the Gmail app on your phone as its own account (it needs IMAP; Google says POP-only accounts can't be added in the app), and use the provider's webmail, Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird on your computer. Google's own advice for businesses is a desktop client with IMAP/SMTP support. The catch: it's a separate inbox, not part of your Gmail list.
Your domain only forwards to Gmail (no mailbox anywhere)
You need a service that can send for your domain, such as iCloud+ with a custom domain (if you use Apple), Zoho Mail, Fastmail, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Prices change, so check each provider's site. Workspace feels like Gmail but is a new, separate account.
The address was mostly cosmetic
Keep forwarding into Gmail and reply from your Gmail address. It's free, with nothing to set up.
Switch without losing mail
- Leave forwarding on.
- Set up the new mailbox or sending service.
- Add DNS records: MX (where mail goes), SPF and DKIM (proof you're allowed to send), and DMARC (what receivers should do with forgeries).
- Send tests to a Gmail and an Outlook address, and check they land in the inbox, not spam.
- Set up your phone and computer, and copy your signature.
- Only then change the old setup.
Be careful with "Send as" replacement tools
Google warns that third-party tools offering to replicate "Send as" "often require access to your email credentials or OAuth tokens." Don't hand anyone your email password. A good helper guides you while you stay logged in yourself.
FAQ
Will I stop receiving email?
Not if it's forwarded. POP collection does stop.
Will I lose old email?
No. Google says imported mail stays.
Do I have to pay for Google Workspace?
No. It's one option among several, and many people can fix this for free.
Does it affect the Gmail app?
Yes for "Send mail as": Google says it ends on mobile too. No for accounts you add separately in the app.
Want a hand with it?
Most people can do this themselves with the steps above. If you'd rather not touch DNS or settings, I (Dennis Yates, through Switchover) can help for a fixed price: a written plan for your exact setup (US$35), or done with you over a screen-share (US$119, plus US$29 per extra address on the same domain). All prices are in US dollars. No GST is charged; your card provider may add a currency conversion fee. Not currently available to customers in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland. You stay logged in to your own accounts; I never ask for your passwords.
